How a campus project runs

Six steps from scope to delivery, and about four weeks from shoot day to the final film.

  1. Kickoff meeting to scope a campus video project
Scope and approvalsWe map the goal, the audience and everyone who signs off: marketing, communications, and the dean or head of school.
  2. Preparing student media release forms before a campus shoot
Releases before camerasWe film under your own photo and media release forms and your directory information policy, and anyone who has opted out stays out of frame.
  3. Planning campus filming locations and a shoot schedule
Campus and schedule planningWe walk the campus, pick locations that read on camera, and build the day around class times and the academic calendar.
  4. Small crew filming on a university campus
Filming on campusA small crew, quiet gear and short call times, so classes, labs and offices keep running while we work.
  5. Editing a university film with captions and social cutdowns
Edit and reviewFirst cut, two rounds of notes, captions, and the cutdowns your channels actually need.
  6. Delivering finished education video files to a university team
Deliver and protect the footageMasters, web files and social cutdowns, with footage access limited to the people you name.

Which education video do you need?

Four formats cover most of what a school or a university buys. Pick by the job it has to do, not by the label.

What education video production means here

Education video production is the making of films for universities, colleges, school networks and education companies: campus and brand films, student and alumni stories, program and degree videos, graduation films, classroom tours, teacher recruitment and online course content. 7 Hills Productions has produced this work for CSU Channel Islands, Higher Ground Education and Jack Westin, from a base in Irvine, California.

One shoot day on campus usually produces a main film plus two or three cutdowns, which is what keeps campus video inside a department budget rather than a capital request.

1Who is it for?

Universities and colleges, K-12 and private school networks, community colleges, edtech and test-prep companies, and school foundations and advancement offices.

2What does it cost?

A typical campus project is $9,000 to $13,500: pre-production, one shoot day and one finished film, plus two or three cutdowns. A single student story starts at $3,500.

3How long does it take?

About four weeks from shoot day to the final film, with two rounds of notes built in.

What education video costs in Southern California

Real ranges rather than a call for a quote. Every number below assumes one crew, one campus and one finished film.

Building your own scope? Pre-production runs $1,000 to $1,500, a shoot day $6,000 to $8,000, and editing $2,000 to $4,000 per finished film. Cutdowns are $750 each. A second finished film from the same footage adds an edit fee, not another shoot day. These match our pricing page and budget estimator.

Why schools and universities hire us

We work around the academic calendar

Class times, finals and commencement are fixed. We build the schedule around them rather than the other way round.

Releases handled your way

We film under your own photo and media release forms and your directory information policy, and we keep anyone who has opted out out of frame.

Students sound like students

We interview rather than script, so the film does not read as a brochure to the seventeen year old it is aimed at.

One day, several assets

One shoot day usually yields the main film plus two or three cutdowns for social, email and paid.

A crew that does not disrupt campus

A small team, quiet gear and short call times, so a building keeps working while we film in it.

Nineteen films for education clients

CSU Channel Islands and the Higher Ground Education Montessori network, across campus films, student stories, graduations and classroom work.

Education video production FAQs

How much does a university video cost?

A typical campus project is $9,000 to $13,500: pre-production, one shoot day and one finished film, plus two or three cutdowns. A single student story starts at $3,500. Full rates are on our pricing page.

How long does it take?

About four weeks from shoot day to the final film. Booking usually runs two to three weeks ahead so the day can sit where your academic calendar allows.

Do you handle student releases?

We film under your own photo and media release forms and your directory information policy. Anyone who has opted out stays out of frame, and we use your paperwork rather than ours.

Can you film while classes are running?

Yes. A small crew, quiet gear and short call times, scheduled around class times, so a building keeps working while we film in it.

What do we get from one shoot day?

Usually one finished film plus two or three cutdowns for social, email and paid campaigns, all from the same footage. A second finished film adds an edit fee, not another shoot day.

Do you work with K-12 and private schools?

Yes. We have produced classroom tours, day-in-the-life films, teacher training and parent marketing for the Higher Ground Education Montessori network.

Can you produce online course content?

Yes. We produce course modules, LMS content and training series, filmed in batch days so the cost per finished module drops.

Do you travel outside Southern California?

We film across Southern California with no travel premium. Further afield, travel is billed at cost.

Who owns the footage?

You do. You get the finished films and the masters, and access to the raw footage is limited to the people you name.
