How does explainer video production work?

Six steps, one team, and the script locked before any animation starts. Most explainer videos take about four weeks from kickoff to final delivery, 28 days on average.

  1. Team planning an explainer video
DiscoveryWho the video is for, what they misunderstand today, and the one thing they must get.
  2. Storyboard sketches for an explainer video
ScriptA plain-language script, read aloud and timed, approved before anything is designed.
  3. Illustrated style frame for an animated explainer

Explainer video, product video, training video or commercial: which do you need?

Four formats that often get confused. An explainer teaches how something works; the others show, train or sell.

What is an explainer video?

An explainer video is a short video, usually 60 to 90 seconds, that shows how a product, service or idea works and why it matters, in plain language. It can be animated, live action or 3D, and it usually lives on a homepage, landing page, sales deck or onboarding flow.

Good explainers answer three questions in the first minute. We write every script around them.

1What problem does this solve?

The pain the viewer already feels, named in the first seconds.

2How does it work?

Three or four simple steps, shown visually rather than listed.

3Why is it better?

The one difference that matters, and what to do next.

What types of explainer videos do you make?

Eight formats, all produced in house. The right one depends on how abstract your product is.

Explainer video production FAQs

How much does an explainer video cost?

Most explainer videos start from $6,000. A 60 to 90 second motion-graphics explainer runs $6,000 to $10,000, a live-action explainer filmed in one day runs $8,500 to $12,500, and 3D product animation and multi-video series are quoted from your script. Every range includes the script, design or filming, voiceover and editing.

How long should an explainer video be?

60 to 90 seconds for a homepage or landing page, one to three minutes for a software walkthrough or onboarding video, and 15 to 30 seconds for ad cutdowns. Shorter is almost always better.

How long does it take to make an explainer video?

About four weeks from kickoff to final delivery, 28 days on average. The script and storyboard take the first week or two, then design and animation or filming, then revisions. 3D animation and longer series take longer.

Animated or live action: which is better?

Animation is best for software, abstract services and anything you cannot film. Live action is best when trust depends on real people or a real product. Many explainers mix both, with a presenter on camera and animated graphics over the top.

Do you write the script?

Yes. Every explainer starts with a script we write and time with you, in plain language, before any design or filming starts.

Do you provide the voiceover?

Yes. We cast and record professional voice talent to picture, typically $300 to $600, or film your own expert as the presenter.

Can you make 3D animations of our product?

Yes. We model products and mechanisms in 3D to show internals, assembly and how parts move, which is ideal for devices and hardware that are hard to film.

Can you explain complex software or medical technology?

Yes. Most of our explainer work is technical: software platforms, medical devices and industrial products. We interview your experts, simplify without distorting, and have claims reviewed before production.

How many revisions are included?

Three rounds of revisions across script, storyboard and final edit, so changes happen early when they are cheap.

Where should we use an explainer video?

On your homepage and product pages, in sales decks and outreach emails, in onboarding flows and help centres, and as short cutdowns for paid social.

Do you make explainers in other languages?

Yes. We can record voiceover in additional languages and add translated captions, so one explainer serves several markets.

Who owns the explainer video?

You do. You get full usage rights to the finished videos, and we keep the project files so updates and new versions are easy later.
